DID YOU KNOW?

The Flower Dome can achieve at least 30% savings in energy consumption compared to conventional cooling technologies used in average commercial buildings in Singapore, even as it operates round-the-clock to keep its temperature cool.

Hot air rises, cold air sinks
Based on this simple theory, the Flower Dome is cooled with the aid of chilled water pipes located within ground slabs. This allows warm air to rise and vent out at higher levels, keeping temperatures at an optimum on ground level.

Converting waste into energy
It is all about sustainable energy! Horticultural waste is converted into energy through massive steam turbine to generate electricity on-site to keep the Flower Dome cool.

Stand in awe of nature inside the Flower Dome. Spectacular and innovative in design, it is one of the icons of Bay South Gardens at Gardens by the Bay.

The Baobabs

The Baobabs

Besides their unusually-shaped bulbous trunks that store water to endure the dry seasons, the Baobabs and other bottle trees also have edible foliage and fruit, as well as medicinal properties. Learn about the characteristics of the different species of Baobabs from Australia, Africa and Madagascar.

Succulent Garden

Succulent Garden

Be amazed at the species of cacti and succulents in the Succulent Garden. From the usual spiky ones, the tall waxy ones to the stumpy corky ones, grab this opportunity to get up close to these desert-native plants.

Australian Garden

Australian Garden

Due to the frequency of bushfires in the hot and dry months of the year, elements native to the Australian flora are adapted to not only survive these occurrences but also rely on them to aid reproduction. Discover how fires are an essential part of the ecology in this region’s plants such as the Grass Trees and Queensland Bottle Trees.

South American Garden

South American Garden

Must-sees in this garden are the Monkey Puzzle Tree, the Chilean Wine Palm and the Spiny Puya (a relative of the pineapple).

Mediterranean Garden and Olive Grove

Mediterranean Garden and Olive Grove

Stop and admire the neatly-lined Italian Cypresses against the Marina Bay skyline. Spot the “wrinkly” collection of Olive Trees, some of which are over one thousand years old. Look out for the Stone Pine Trees if you love pine nuts as well as the Cork Oak Trees, which is used to make cork for wine bottle stoppers.
